SpaceX is targeting launch of the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite to a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The four-hour launch window opens on Sunday, July 22 at 1:50 a.m. EDT, or 5:50 UTC.
The satellite will be deployed approximately 32 minutes after liftoff. A four-hour backup launch window opens on Monday, July 23 at 1:50 a.m. EDT, or 5:50 UTC.
Following stage separation, SpaceX will attempt to land Falcon 9’s first stage on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

What happens to the Second Stage? I haven't heard of them recovering it yet but I'm sure they would like to. Reusability. Does it just fall out of orbit and burn up on reentry? Maybe a smaller boost back/deceleration kind of burn to drop it out of orbit faster. I know we don't want more space junk flying around.

It appears for the Falcon 9, Block 5 version, they are using different cameras for the second stage. Notice when the engine is lit, one camera gives a magenta colour look while the other camera is orange. The prior cameras seemed more realistic to me. Anyone know what the story behind this is?

"What is the cost and what is the benefit for SpaceX ?" Exactly. Plus there's already a support ship for the drone ship. The landing struts have to be secured to the deck before the journey back to port. But that ship is too small to be a stable platform to maintain a satellite uplink.

Any rocket engineers out there? I'm trying to understand what causes the small flame plumes that appear to originate from between the engine bells and exit perpendicular to the path of the vehicle. These small plumes are visible beginning around youtube video time of 15:35 to 15:45. BTW, I am not referring to the main exhaust plume umbrellaing (is that a word) out as the vehicle gains altitude.
Greg Economan
Greg Economan Pirms 2 Gadiem
Thank you
Lewis North
Lewis North Pirms 2 Gadiem
Yeah its the gas generator exhaust, basically, the engine burns a small amount of its fuel in a section called the preburner, which drives a turbine, which powers the fuel pump to the main engine. The small flame is the exhaust from the preburner.
Motokid600

Can I request that the orbit (GSO, in this case) be described in slightly more detail next time?
Menachem Salomon
Menachem Salomon Pirms 2 Gadiem
Lewis That's what I'm wondering about. Is the audience really not interested? Am I the only one? Or are they underestimating the populace? As for time, there's enough filler conversation going on. I'd suggest they try it, and see what kind of reaction they get. It is rocket science, after all.
Lewis North
Lewis North Pirms 2 Gadiem
Since there is only one extra burn, I assume the GTO would be an oval, it would require two extra burns to make it circular, like the hohmann transfer. So the satellite probably performs the second burn to circularise itself, which isn't livestreamed because SpaceX doesn't control the payload once it's separated from the second stage. I guess they don't explain that because it would take too much time and most people watching wouldn't care enough.
Menachem Salomon
Menachem Salomon Pirms 2 Gadiem
Lewis Lewis Thanks. My point is that the narrator or host should be saying that, and I shouldn't have to wait for the helpful comments. I am also asking for more specific detail, not just the generic explanation of orbital terms. For example, what does this GTO look like? I expect that the final GSO is nearly circular, but the GTO has to move the satellite from an altitude of ~600 km at deployment to an altitude of ~40,000 km where orbital velocity matches the rotational velocity of the ground below, hence appearing to remain motionless relative to the Earth's surface.
Lewis North
Lewis North Pirms 2 Gadiem
Menachem Salomon I can explain it, this satellite is going into geo stationary orbit which means it orbits at the same speed that the earth rotates so it stays above the same place above the earth. The satellites need to be quite far out to get there, but the rocket doesn't get that far out, so it gets to an orbit called geostationary transfer orbit, and the satellite carries on by itself.

Johnny J Pirms 2 Gadiem

HTSSTR
HTSSTR Pirms 2 Gadiem
SpaceX captures all the video of the landing on the drone ship, the problem is the live feed signal is lose in the last few seconds.
David Keenan
David Keenan Pirms 2 Gadiem
SpaceX has all the footage it needs to learn from all its missions. We're just talking about maintaing a live feed for drone ship landings. That would only sate the desire of people like us who enjoy watching the landings in real time. But it would generate no income to compensate for the extra costs.
Johnny J
Johnny J Pirms 2 Gadiem
The same way Nasa justified have all those camera during the liftoff of the Challenger disaster in 1986...to learn.
David Keenan

They could get better footage, but the extra cost would have to be justified. We have plenty of footage of boosters landing, so how would you justify the considerable extra cost of obtaining good footage of every landing at sea?
